As a vegetation scientist I am interested in vegetation dynamics and drivers of change in plant communities and sentinel species especially in the arid biomes, i.e. Succulent- and Nama-Karoo and arid Savanna, of South Africa. These biomes are primarily used as extensive rangelands for livestock production. It is known that current and historical land use practices are determinants of the quality of rangeland and are of crucial importance in ensuring the viability of rangelands is maintained for food security and in order to ensure an income for local communities.
My work therefore aims to better understand the functioning of arid systems by gathering and analysing data that can inform current and future adaptations necessary to protect both people and the environment. This is particularly relevant in view of predicted climate change.
